Tap dancing is a lively form of dance that originated in the 1800s and has complex roots in several forms of dance (including Irish step and English clogging). Tap dancing enjoyed renewed interest during the late eighties thanks to legendary performer, Sammy Davis, Jr., and his role in the popular movie, "Tap." Tap dancing is less constrictive than other forms of dance, particularly ballet. While it can take years to master ballet, if ever, it is entirely possible to discover tap dancing later in life and still perform quite respectably. Below you're going to discover how to become a tap dancer. For the following moves, there are endless variations for your hand movements, but you will be given specific instructions for a simple default position. Below you will learn how to perform four beginner moves and one advanced beginner move. If you need additional guidance and feel you will benefit from live interaction, consider purchasing an instructional video or taking an adult tap class at a local dance studio. Stand with your feet and legs close together but not quite touching. Your feet will be slightly less than hip distance apart and your toes should point forward. Place your hands on your hips. Pick up your right foot, moving it slightly forward. Place your right heel on the ground when your leg is stretched as far forward as it can go while still keeping your left foot planted on the ground. Your right toes will be pointing forward and up at a 45 degree angle to the ground. Bring your right foot back toward your body and place your foot on the ground back in the initial position. Repeat Step 2, this time beginning with your left foot and digging it out. Bring your left foot back toward your body and place your foot on the ground back in the initial position. Continue the dig step sequence bydig stepping on the right as indicated inSteps 2 and3 followed by dig stepping on the left as in Steps 4 and 5. Repeat this sequence until you are comfortable. Lift your right foot slightly off the ground so that neither your toes nor your heel are touching the ground. Move your right foot forward by lightly brushing the ball of your foot on the ground leading with your toes. Complete the flap by pressing the entire ball of your foot evenly onto the floor. Now press your right heel onto the floor. Your right foot will stay planted where it is and you will begin next on the left. Lift your left foot slightly off the ground. Lightly brush the ball of your left foot on the ground leading with your toes. Complete the flap by pressing the entire ball of your foot evenly onto the floor. Now press your left heel onto the floor. Your left foot will stay planted on the ground. Continue the Flap Heel step by performing Steps 2 and 3 followed by Steps 4 and 5 until you are comfortable. Move your right foot in front of you and brush the ball of your foot against the ground. Your heel willnot make contact with the ground at all. Bring your right foot toward you, again brushing the ball of your foot against the ground. Raise your right knee slightly and hop, bringing the heel of your left foot slightly off the ground. Place your right foot back in the initial position. You will be in the position you were in Step 1. Move your left foot in front of you and brush the ball of your foot against the ground. As in Step 2, your heel will not make contact with the ground at all. Bring your left foot toward you, again brushing the ball of your foot against the ground. Raise your left knee slightly and hop bringing the heel of your right foot slightly off the ground. Place your left foot back in the initial position. You will be in the position you were in Step 1. Continue shuffle hop stepping on your right foot as indicated in Steps 2 through 5 followed by shuffle hop stepping on your left foot as indicated in Steps 6 through 9 multiple times in a row until you have mastered this step. When you progress toward more difficult steps, the Shuffle Hop Step can serve as a warm up. Lift your right foot about four inches off the ground and step with your entire foot, letting both your toes and heel evenly hit the floor. All your weight will now be on your right foot. (a) At the same time your right foot hits the floor, raise your left foot so that your knee is slightly bent and your foot is about four inches off the ground. Perform a shuffle as you did in Steps 4 and 5 of Shuffle Step except that your left foot will be outstretched to your left and shuffling with your toes and foot facing the front left corner. Bring your left foot back toward you and transfer all your weight to your left foot. (a) At the same time your left foot hits the floor, raise your right foot off the ground and hold it suspended in the air. Your right knee will be slightly above the midway point between the floor and hip level. The toes of your right foot will be about four inches above the floor and pointing toward the floor. Your right calf will be crossing in front of your left leg and your right foot will be to the left of your left leg. The February 2007 issue / Volume XIV Number 2 had a barefoot runner on the front and the tag line, barefoot designs challenge footwear conventions. Since the subject of happy feet and improved posture is near to my heart, I was curious to learn more into the differences between running with shoes and running barefoot has been going on since the mid 80 Findings seem to indicate that peak joint loads may be reduced at the knee hip when barefoot. But shoes do decrease shock transmission for the spine. The increase support we gain from our shoes means that some of the intrinsic muscles of the feet and lower legs no longer need to do the work they would normally be responsible for. So what you gain in a more supportive shoe, you might actually be losing in your body ability to maintain the fine tuning motor control for balance and stability at the feet. (Stronger shoe = weaker feet.) Shoe companies Nike and MBT are beginning to take a look at this, and have started to design shoes with less support (so the feet have a chance to work harder.) While they not sure yet how this might translate into athletic performance, there are indications that a stronger more flexible foot might perform better with a lower risk of injury. That last sentence put a wide smile on my face. With the great amount of emphasis we place on your feet with Pilates, it seems evident that the more correctly things work from the ground up, your whole body will be aligned for free and easy movement. Irene Davis, PT, PhD, professor of physical therapy and director of the Running Injury Clinic at the University of Delaware, said, she has been motivated to incorporate more barefoot walking in her own life. Ms. Davis also said, think perhaps the widespread plantar fasciitis in this country is partly due to the fact that we really don allow the muscles in our feet to do what they are designed to do. Affirmation for me that the focus we place on your footwork at Centerworks is helping to be sure that your feet know how to do what they are supposed to be doing as you walk, run, skip, hop, and jump for joy that you have healthy feet! Nike Air Foamposite Onered Supreme,Also referred to as psoriatic nail disease, nail psoriasis is a common affliction that often accompanies skin psoriasis. Around 2 to 3 percent of the population is estimated to suffer from the skin variety of this condition, and approximately 50 percent of those end up having to deal with the nail version of it as well. If you suffer from either condition, you know that it can often be a difficult social problem. Not only must you deal with the general problems that the disease brings, but also the misconceptions that people have about it. People may believe that you're contagious or, worse yet, assume that you have some other, dangerous disease. The exact causes of this condition are unknown, though it is certain that it is not contagious. There are many theories concerning what may cause the disease to occur, though most of these are as of yet unproven. It is believed that immune system problems, particularly overactive T cells, may cause excessive production of skin cells and the resulting inflammation associated. Environmental factors, such as physical and emotional stress, have also been linked to increased symptoms. Some medications are also thought to increase symptoms. The main factor in who develops nail psoriasis, and psoriasis in general, appears to be genetic. If you have a parent or sibling with the condition, the chances are approximately 20 percent that you will develop it as well. If both your parents are affected, then those chances raise to 75 percent. Also, as you get older you develop a higher chance of the disease manifesting, though other factors such as you gender or ethnicity appear to have no affect. Symptoms of Psoriatic Nail Disease In addition to the symptoms that you may experience because of skin psoriasis, you might notice one or more of the following changes to your nails: Oil Drop / Salmon Patch A yellow red, translucent nail discoloration that resembles a drop of blood or oil beneath them. Beau Lines Horizontal lines across the nails. Nail Matrix Pits in the nails. Leukonychia White patches appearing on the nails. Subungal Hyperkeratosis Thickening of the skin underneath the nails. Onycholysis Loosening of the nails from the skin which can sometimes lead to infections. Plate Crumbling The weakened nails begin to crumble. Splinter Hemorrhaging Black lines appear in the nails, running from the tips to the cuticles. Caused by capillaries at the tips of the fingers bleeding between the nails and the skin. Spotted Lunula Redness in the normally pale arch at the bottom of the nails. If you experience some or all of these symptoms, it is easy to visit your doctor and get a diagnosis to confirm whether or not you have nail psoriasis. It is important to treat your condition before it gets too bad, as neglect may end in infections or painful inflammation. Treatment Options for Psoriatic Nails While there is no known cure for psoriatic nail disease as of yet, there are several treatments you can adhere to in order to strengthen the nails and improve their overall appearance, thus reducing the impact that it has on your life. Medications are the most common way to treat nail psoriasis effectively. Topical creams and ointments can be used which contain various ingredients to counteract your symptoms. Steroid creams or vitamin A and D rich ointments are your first line of defense. Ff a fungal infection has occurred (a condition that is quite common), you may need to use an antifungal cream to clear it up. If you have trouble treating your psoriasis due to the inaccessibility of the skin beneath the nail, a corticosteroid injection is another possibility. Other medical treatments involved removal of all or part of the nail, using either a chemical or surgical process. With the chemical option, an ointment is used that will, over time, soften your nail, loosen it from its attachment to the skin and eventually cause your nail to fall off both painlessly and without any bleeding. If the surgical option is used, it is a fairly simple process that uses a local anesthetic. Other than the above options, there is little else that you can do to clear up a psoriasis problem with your nails. Covering the problem through a regimen of scraping, filing and polishing may help with appearances, as can the use of artificial nails over your damaged ones, though these are only aesthetic and do not solve the problem in the long run. Some people claim "miracle cures" for this condition, but, unfortunately, the vast majority of them are based on theories that have no basis in any scientific research and are only meant to prey upon desperate people. In general, you should avoid using any sort of alternative cure without at first consulting your doctor. Some of these products or "extreme" diets can actually cause more harm than good or be toxic to your system.

His work is very politically driven, and some of his critics claim that it's also more biased than a documentary maker should be. Others accuse him of being a privileged, hypocritical 'limousine liberal'. However, to his many fans and supporters, Michael Moore is a powerful and much needed voice against corporate corruption and political deception. This entry takes a look at Moore's films. During the 1980s, the giant American car corporation General Motors kept steadily 'downsizing' their operations in Flint, Michigan. Eventually, the company ceased its operations in Flint altogether, throwing tens of thousands of local people out of work. Michael Moore decided that GM's Chief Executive Officer, Roger Smith, should be made to explain why he'd done this to Flint. So Moore raised funds by, amongst other things, organising bingo games at his home, and then made his first feature film. Roger Me is a feature length documentary telling the story of Moore's attempts to get an interview with Smith. 20,000 people are seen standing in line at one location to collect rations of federal surplus cheese and butter. Thousands of people leave Flint, as local unemployment reaches 25 per cent and the rate of violent crime in Flint becomes worse than those in infamous crime black spots as Miami and Detroit. The city council's attempts to improve matters include paying a TV evangelist named Robert Schuller $30,000 to come to Flint and hold a prayer meeting to call for divine intervention to save the city. But the prayers aren't answered. Before long, the city health department announces that there are now more rats than people in Flint, and offers a bounty for every dead rat brought in by a city resident. Meanwhile, The Flint Chamber of Commerce erects billboards featuring 'morale boosting' slogans including 'Visit Flint And Leave the Real World Behind!'. While all this is going on, Michael Moore keeps trying to meet Roger Smith. He visits General Motors' global headquarters in Detroit and is immediately escorted out of the building. He's also ejected from a GM board meeting, and embarks on a long search for Smith through various places popular with the rich and powerful. Then, just when his quest seems hopeless, Moore finally gets to meet Smith. Despite its rock bottom budget, Roger Me became a surprise commercial success, and collected awards at numerous film festivals. Its success was fuelled by debates triggered by its content. Some of Moore's detractors have claimed that the sequencing of the film is misleading, in that the events in Flint did not occur in the order suggested by Roger Me. But the film has been widely acclaimed for the way that it starkly exposes the human cost of cold business decisions, and its commercial success has been extraordinary. Made for $160,000, it grossed around $25 million in all formats, and became the most financially successful non concert documentary in Hollywood history. Michael Moore, filmmaker, had arrived. Canadian Bacon (1995) Canadian Bacon is a satirical comedy drama, written and directed by Moore. It concerns a US President (Alan Alda) who decides to boost his falling popularity by starting a war with Canada. Sheriff Bud B. Boomer (John Candy), based near the border at Niagara County, takes the President's anti Canadian propaganda to heart and decides to lead his own invasion of Canada. Although Canadian Bacon was critically acclaimed at the time of its release, it wasn't a major commercial success, and it has often been misunderstood. Moore's script satirises the stereotypical American view of Canadians. Some viewers found the exaggerated stereotypes in the film offensive, although others understood Moore's satirical intentions and found the film hilarious1. The plot device of a US Canada war was subsequently adapted by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for their 1999 movie South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (Moore later returned the compliment in the short animated 'History of America' section of Bowling for Columbine). Sadly, Canadian Bacon was the last film ever completed by Candy, the heavyweight star of hit comedies like Uncle Buck and Cool Runnings. He died of a heart attack before Canadian Bacon was released. The Big One (1997) The Big One is a documentary about the tour of America Moore took to promote his book Downsize This: Random Threats From An Unarmed American. Whilst on the road, Moore took the opportunity to investigate more corporate misdeeds, and the most famous sequence in the film is a revealing interview with Nike CEO Phil Knight. In amongst the busy book signings and confrontations with corporate security guards is a sequence in which music fan Moore gets to jam with Rick Nielsen, guitarist with the band Cheap Trick. The title comes from Moore's suggestion that 'The Big One' would make a good new name for the United States of America! Bowling For Columbine (2002) Bowling For Columbine begins with Michael Moore visiting a bank to open an account. He leaves the bank happily brandishing an unusual free gift: a rifle, one of the range of guns this bank offers as an inducement to new customers. From that beginning, Bowling For Columbine becomes steadily more shocking. The inspiration for Bowling For Columbine was the Columbine massacre, the 1999 tragedy in which two youths took guns to Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado, USA and killed 15 people. Footage taken from the school's security cameras showing the killers in the school during the massacre is included in Bowling For Columbine, although none of the fatal shootings are shown. The film's title comes from the macabre fact that the two killers went bowling on the morning of the tragedy, before heading to the school to kill their classmates and themselves. Moore uses the Columbine horror as a starting point for a broadly based investigation into the American relationship with guns. Bowling For Columbine asks why there are so many more fatal shootings in the USA than in other nations. Moore points out that the startling statistics on gun related killings can't simply be explained by the high rate of gun ownership in the USA, since Canada has a similarly high proportion of gun owners in its population but a much lower murder rate. He suggests that the shocking number of shootings in the USA may be caused by peculiarly American cultural factors, such as the bloodthirsty nature of American news coverage and the widening gap between rich and poor in America. The film contains several highly memorable interviews. Marilyn Manson, who was criticised after the Columbine massacre for allegedly being a bad influence on the killers, offers a strikingly eloquent self defence and analysis of the tragedy. Moore also interviews Charlton Heston, the veteran movie star and spokesman for the National Rifle Association, the American pressure group that lobbies against restrictions on gun ownership in the USA. When asked why there are so many shootings in America, Heston shockingly cites 'mixed ethnicity' as a prime cause of the problem. Bowling For Columbine was a massive critical and commercial success, enjoying a long and successful run in American cinemas and entering the UK box office Top 10 an almost unheard of feat for a documentary. It was showered with awards, among them the Academy Award (or Oscar) for Best Documentary. Moore hit the headlines after the Academy Awards ceremony in March 2003 when he used his Oscar acceptance speech to deliver a blistering attack on President George W Bush. His statement was all the more controversial because it came during the war in Iraq. While other Oscar winners mentioned the conflict, none were as outspoken as Moore. Unsurprisingly, the film and the Oscar acceptance speech made Moore some new enemies, and some of the claims Moore made in Bowling For Columbine were hotly disputed by his critics. Moore made a detailed response to the criticisms of Columbine in an article posted on his website.
